This past week, the leadership at Delta Millworks had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Lunawood through a trip to Finland for the company’s first-ever International Partner Day. As one of the leading producers of ThermoWood® in the global market, Lunawood shed light not only on the quality of their product, but also on the intricate processes and values that the company embodies.

Established in 1997, Lunawood boasts a rich history as one of the oldest and largest producers of ThermoWood globally. Moreover, as a founding member of the Thermowood Association, their dedication to industry standards and quality is unwavering. Their patented thermo-treatment process utilizes only heat and steam, setting a benchmark in the wood industry for eco-friendly wood production.

This method enhances wood properties, resulting in stability and durability. With moisture content reduced to 4-7% post-treatment, Lunawood’s ThermoWood products are exceptionally resilient. Each of Lunawood’s products holds a Class 2 Durability rating, endorsed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) for an expected service life of 30 years.

Delta Millworks’ visit began with a tour of operations at Metsä, Lunawood’s largest supplier of raw materials. The sheer scale and efficiency of the sawmill left an indelible impression. Processing an impressive 100 truckloads of logs daily with a workforce of only 90 individuals, Metsä exemplifies cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices. Notably, they convert all wood scraps and sawdust into bioenergy, showcasing the company’s commitment to maximizing resources.

To further their sustainability efforts, Lunawood exclusively sources PEFC-certified Nordic spruce and pine from local Finnish forests. This decision ensures both quality and minimal environmental impact. With an average transport distance of 235 kilometers to their production facilities, Lunawood reduces carbon footprint while supporting local economies. Furthermore, Lunawood’s dedication to reforestation is admirable. For every tree harvested in Finland, four new seedlings are planted, ensuring forests continue to thrive and expand.

Through a blend of innovation, quality, and environmental consciousness, Lunawood is paving the way for a smarter, greener future for the wood industry. Delta Millworks is proud to share in this commitment as a US partner for the Finnish brand. You can find out more information about Lunawood and its products here.
